Don't Be A Carjacking Victim!

  • Always park in areas that will be well-lit after dark
  • Don't park in isolated or visually obstructed areas near walls or heavy foliage
  • Use valet parking or an attended garage
  • Ask for a security escort if you are alone at a shopping center, especially after dark
  • Watch out for young males loitering in the area - even those handing out flyers, soliciting donations, etc.
  • If someone tries to approach, change direction or run to a crowded area.
  • As you approach your parked vehicle, look under, around and inside of it before you enter
  • If safe to do so, open the door, enter quickly, and lock the doors
  • Avoid turning your back while loading items into the car
  • Make it your habit to always start your vehicle and drive away immediately
  • When in your vehicle, always keep the doors locked and the windows rolled up.
  • When stopped in traffic, leave room to drive away if needed
  • If bumped by another car, be suspicious. Wave for them to follow you, then drive to a busy place or police station
  • Never confront an armed carjacker. Give up your keys or money if demanded without resistance
  • If you are forced to drive the carjacker, consider crashing or disabling your vehicle near a busy intersection so others will come to your aid
