Fire Department History

FD 1959 Central City 1st fire TruckIn 1947, the City of Frontenac was formed, and fire protection was provided by the Creve Coeur Fire Association.

In 1959, the City of Frontenac received their first fire apparatus and began responding to their own fire calls marking the creation of the Frontenac Fire Department. It wasn’t until the following year that the apparatus had a place to call home in Frontenac; prior to that it was housed in the neighboring city of Town and Country. In 1960, the Frontenac Fire Department moved into the first firehouse located at 10555 Clayton Road, sharing the building with the City Hall and Police Department.

FD Ambulance 377By 1978, the staffing grew to a structure consisting of a Chief, three Captains, and nine Privates, including a Medical Officer. The fire department continued to respond with a Basic Life Support Ambulance until 1984. At that time, in order to improve patient care capabilities of the staff, existing Emergency Medical Technicians were sent to Paramedic school, and an Advanced Life Support Ambulance was funded.

By 1986, the governing parties decided it was more economical to contract a private transport ambulance service. From 1986 until 1992, the private ambulance service ran all EMS calls and transports. Around 1992, the City decided to reinstate the EMS service and firefighters were re-trained to the EMT level and provided Basic Life Support. In 1995, the Fire Department decided to upgrade to Advanced Life Support to ensure patients were receiving the most advanced level of pre-hospital emergency care. As a result, six firefighters were trained to the paramedic level. This assured rapid medical intervention for the residents of Frontenac while allowing the fire apparatus personnel to stay in service during the patient’s transport by private ambulance to the hospital.

FD Old SeagravesIn an effort to maintain ISO ratings and to better serve the citizens of the community, it was decided in 2010 to reinstate the Advanced Life Support Ambulance. A new ambulance was purchased and six firefighter/paramedics were hired. This brought the department to its current staff of 20 personnel with a structure of a Chief, an Assistant Chief Fire Marshall, three Captains, two Lieutenants, a Medical Officer and 12 Privates.

Also in 2010, the fire department moved into its current home at the rear of the newly constructed City complex where all apparatus and staff are housed to respond to approximately 1,000 calls per year.
